One of my favourite places to photograph
There’s something about shooting weddings in Lichfield that just feels easy in the best possible way. It’s one of those places where everything you need is right there, and as a photographer, that makes a massive difference to how a wedding day flows. Especially for registry office weddings, where things can sometimes feel a bit more compact or time-sensitive, Lichfield gives you so much variety within a few minutes’ walk that it never feels restrictive.
The city centre has this really relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that couples immediately settle into. You’re not dealing with the chaos of a big city, but you’ve still got loads of character. Architecturally, it’s brilliant. You’ve got a mix of classic Georgian buildings, little tucked-away streets, and then of course the presence of Lichfield Cathedral, which just elevates everything visually. Even if couples aren’t getting married there, it still becomes part of the story. You turn a corner and suddenly you’ve got this incredible backdrop that adds real depth and scale to the photos without having to overthink it.
What I love most is how natural everything feels. I’m very much about keeping things relaxed and not over-posing people, and Lichfield really supports that style. You can just go for a short wander with a couple and within ten or fifteen minutes you’ve got a full set of varied images. There’s texture in the brickwork, soft light bouncing around the streets, little pockets of quiet where couples can just be themselves without feeling like they’re on display.

Then you’ve got Beacon Park, which is such a bonus. It’s literally right there, and it gives you a completely different feel without needing to travel. One minute you’re in the heart of the city with that architectural backdrop, and the next you’re in open green space with trees, pathways and loads of natural light. It’s ideal for those more relaxed, romantic shots where couples can just walk, chat and forget the camera is even there. In the spring and summer especially, it looks incredible, but even in autumn and winter it still has a lot of character.
From a practical point of view, it just works. Everything is close together, which means less time travelling and more time actually enjoying the day. That’s huge for couples, especially if they’re planning something smaller or more intimate. There’s no pressure to rush around trying to fit everything in. You can take your time, keep things calm, and still come away with a really strong set of images.
