A heatwave wedding in the gardens

Quorn Grange is a nineteenth-century country house hotel on the edge of Quorn, just outside Loughborough in Leicestershire. The front of the house is almost completely covered in ivy, with tiered topiary either side of the door, and behind it there are around eight acres of gardens with huge old cedars and a white gazebo licensed for outdoor ceremonies.

Sarah and Sam’s wedding landed right in the middle of that summer’s heatwave. The lawns had turned golden, everyone was hunting for shade, and the sun didn’t let up all day. It made for bright, warm, properly summery photos, and nobody let the heat slow them down.

The colours were blush and navy throughout: blush pink bridesmaids, navy three-piece suits with blush ties, and ivory roses with eucalyptus everywhere. They asked for an unplugged ceremony, so their guests were present for it rather than watching through a phone screen, and it showed in the faces.

The morning

Getting ready at Quorn Grange

Sarah got ready at the hotel with her bridesmaids, still in matching pyjamas under a Bride To Be banner while hair and make-up got going by the leaded windows. Her dress hung in the window waiting. Outside, Sam and his groomsmen found the shade of a huge cedar tree to get their buttonholes on, before the bridesmaids helped Sarah into her lace dress and veil.

The ceremony

Vows in the garden gazebo

The ceremony was outside, in the white gazebo dressed with roses and trailing white flowers, with rows of white chairs set out on the sun-baked lawn. Sarah walked up the aisle on her grandad’s arm while Sam waited at the front, looking slightly nervous. There was plenty of laughter through the vows, then the rings, the first kiss, signing the register among the roses, and a walk back up the aisle through a shower of confetti.

Drinks in the garden

Fizz, cold beers and the whole crowd

Drinks were served in the gardens, with strawberries in the fizz and ice-cold Peroni for anyone who needed cooling down. We gathered everyone on the lawn for one big group photo, then spent some time with family and friends while the guests made the most of the shade.

The details

Roses, eucalyptus and a tower of cupcakes

Ivory and blush roses with gypsophila and eucalyptus, an acrylic cards and gifts sign, and round tables dressed in white with dark runners and blush chair covers. Instead of a big tiered cake, a single white tier with a navy ribbon sat on top of a tower of cupcakes.

Just the two of you

From the gazebo to the ivy

We started back at the gazebo, then went looking for shade under the old trees at the edge of the grounds, where the long grass had turned gold in the heat. We finished at the front of the house, with the ivy walls and the old stone doorway, which are some of my favourite backdrops at Quorn Grange.

Into the evening

Speeches, cake and the first dance

Speeches full of laughter (and at least one framed prop), glasses raised for a toast, cutting the cake, and a first dance on the light-up dancefloor. A last few minutes outside as the light softened finished the day off.

  1. The garden gazebo

A lovely, bright setting for an outdoor ceremony, and its canopy gives you some welcome shade on a hot day.

  2. The ivy-covered front

The ivy walls and tiered topiary make the front of the house a stunning backdrop. Leave time for a few photos here.

  3. The old stone doorway

Just around the house, with ivy all round it. Perfect for a few close, quiet portraits.

  4. The cedar trees

Huge, dramatic and full of shade. Great for groomsmen and bridesmaid group photos.

  5. The edge of the grounds

Mature trees and open fields beyond them. Head out in the softer light later in the day.
